Stage Fright

I haven’t posted anything in the past four days because, well, honestly, I’m a bit wary. Ever since posting my rant about the suckiness that is iTunes 7, this blog has received many visitors. According to my blog stats, yesterday alone it got 308 hits. Before the iTunes post, the “Total Views” thingy on the WordPress admin was at approximately 450. I’m now up to 1,222. I thought it would taper off in a couple of days, and I could go back to posting “normally”, but the hits keep on coming. Not that I’m complaining. It’s unfortunate, however, that I don’t have an actual solution to these iTunes problems. It looks like a lot of people are having them, but at least I can give comfort to others in the knowledge that they are not alone. I only wish Apple would heed these cries for help.

Since my post, I haven’t tried anything new to fix the issues I encountered. I’ve kept looking, but it seems all the proposed fixes I find are variations of things I’ve tried already. I thought about taking my iPod to the local Apple store, but I have a feeling the “genius” behind the bar would just suggest I restore the iPod, and I don’t need them to tell me that.

I know that I’ve been harsh on Apple, but I do understand that creating Windows applications is more complicated than writing software for the homogeneous Mac environment. Nonetheless, I like to assume that Apple did a bit of quality assurance on the product, at least against “modern” hardware. I have a Dell laptop that is six months old. At the time of purchase, it was the latest-and-greatest available from Dell, so I cannot imagine that my issue would be related to computer hardware. My iPod is only nine months old, so I cannot fathom that it is an iPod hardware issue. I also understand that perhaps a vast majority of people probably have no issues with iTunes 7, but I guess it was naive of me to think Apple would jump quickly to action and fix the issues of a small number of iPod users. When you have sold what seems like a gazillion units of a products, I suppose its expected – and acceptable - to have a percentage of unhappy users.

At this point, I’ve made a grudging peace with iTunes 7. I can live without the 1.2 firmware, I suppose, although I was looking forward to the Quick Scroll feature, or whatever its called. Perhaps with version 7.01 or 8.0 Apple will finally fix some of these issues. To dream the impossible dream . . .
